Analyses of regeneration processes provide clues to pattern formation mechanisms and offer the opportunity that the processes might be manipulated to replace damaged body parts (Marsh and Theisen, 1999). Therefore, the distal regeneration, the rebuilding of lost appendages in larval and adult animals was investigated in various vertebrates like fish or amphibians and invertebrates like crustaceans or insects (Akimenko et al., 1995; Brockes, 1997; Cooper, 1998; Marsh and Theisen, 1999; Muller et al., 1999; Mykles, 2001).
