Across scales: novel insights into kidney health and disease by structural biology
2021, Kidney InternationalCitation Excerpt :Activation of integrins is required for ligand binding to their extracellular region, which is mediated from the integrin-expressing cell itself, thereby regulating its attachment to surrounding components (“inside-out” signaling).17,18 Ligand binding to integrins in turn induces intracellular signaling cascades, influencing critical cellular processes such as differentiation and proliferation (“outside-in” signaling).19 This differential bidirectional regulation is mediated by conformational changes in the extracellular part of the integrin.
