Genome evolution: Are microsatellites really simple sequences?

Abstract

Recent studies on microsatellite stability in yeast show that, as the repeat array of a microsatellite grows, its mutation rate increases and spectrum of mutations changes; these effects have important consequences for the evolution of microsatellites in genomes.
